Are you in year Foundation to 6? We encourage you to participate!

The National History Challenge is an exciting opportunity to engage with history in a creative way.

You can:

  • Create a museum exhibit as an individual or group (up to four) using either physical or digital mediums.
  • Write an individual research essay of between 800–1000 words, not including the bibliography. A great place to start your research is our website Exploring Democracy
  • Get creative and use other formats such as a performance, multimedia presentation or a website. Digital tools and apps such as iMovie, StopMotion Recorder, Thinglink or the History in Place Toolkit can be a great place to start.

Important information for your teacher

Primary entries are divided into two categories Primary 1 (up to Year 4) and Primary 2 (Years 5 and 6). National winners in the Primary 1 category will not be eligible to travel to Canberra; they will receive recognition for the national award in their home state or territory.

Digital presentations must have appropriate software to run and exhibits must be portable, lightweight, demountable and sturdy enough to transport interstate if necessary. They must be submitted in a package that is suitable for transport by post or courier and be less than 1 metre square when assembled. Entries must be succinct and able to be judged within 10 minutes. All requirements are fully outlined on the National History Challenge website.

The National History Challenge is a research-based competition for students. More information is available on the National History Challenge site.
